Bill would help feed Alaska’s kids

To the editor:

Senate Bill 3 would provide additional funds to Alaska schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to children coming from low-income families. The bill was introduced very early in the legislative session last year, but is currently stalled in the House Finance Committee. The head of the committee, Rep. Bill Stoltze, refuses to schedule a hearing for the bill.

Not only will this program benefit children of low-income homes, it also will benefit those who are able to buy lunch every day, as increased funding can be used to improve the quality of food served.

If you feel strongly about children eating or about improving the quality of food served, I implore you to contact your legislators to let them know that this bill passing is important to you (especially if you live in Rep. Stoltze’s district).
