Bills support travel industry

To the editor:

I am an artist who, for the past 30 years, has had a stake in shouting the praises of our land, Alaska. I am writing in support SB 311 and HB 422.

We in the arts carry the standard as no other industries do.

Most of us operate on a razor-thin margin to keep our heads above water and our work out there depicting this amazing Land of the Midnight Sun.

In addition, we have steadfastly donated our art year after year, time after time, to do our small part helping worthy causes that benefit the people here. I hope others will echo that support by asking for increases in the money allocated for marketing efforts for our great state.

As a lifelong Alaskan, I am proud of our heritage and our history. I grew up in the Territory of Alaska and witnessed our welfare subjected to the mercy of federal whim. When we became a state, I saw great joy everywhere — at the big bonfire on 9th Avenue, in the newspaper that declared, “We’re In!” It was a proud new day. Alaska’s people taking charge of Alaska’s future.

Now, we need the help of the governing bodies to advance the cause.

Please write your legislators and ask them to help us tell the world about Alaska by taking action on these bills and support increased funding to the Alaska Travel Industry Association.
