WASILLA — Black Birch Books is hosting a 4-year anniversary celebration Thursday, May 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The public is invited to help celebrate the milestone with special sales and treats throughout the day.

“This is huge, absolutely huge,” Black Birch Books owner Taylor Jordan said. “This store has grown so much I’m having trouble keeping it small.”

Black Birch originally started out of a small unit in downtown Wasilla off Main Street. Jordan relocated to a larger facility off Bogard after recouping from the onset of the pandemic. After four years of growing and adapting, Jordan said that she’s accomplished her goal of establishing a safe, fun, and encouraging hub for the community.

“Helping people is something I’m very passionate about,” Jordan said.

Black Birch hosts a variety of community workshops, events, and monthly activities. Each month, locals can participate in social outings such as open mic nights, stitching meetings, and meetups for writers. They also host author events exclusively for Alaskans.

“We do all of the things,” Jordan said.

Jordan also offers book repair services. She said that she plans to continue adding new and unique activities to foster social connection, skill-building, and most of all, a good time with like-minded people. She said her ultimate goal for all her various projects and endeavors around the store is to make a positive impact on the community.

“I don’t censor anything. There is no agenda,” Jordan said.

As far as summer reading goes, Jordan recommends a light or “cozy” mystery to those looking to get back in the habit of reading or keep it up throughout the season. She also urges people to read any banned book that catches their attention.

“One should always question,” Jordan said.

Black Birch Books is located at 2901 East Bogard Road in Wasilla.
