WASILLA — The public is invited to share their voice at Black Birch Books’ Open Mic Night Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
“It’s really heartwarming and always fun,” Black Birch Books owner Taylor Jordan said.
All ages and talents are welcome at this free event. Participants have the chance to share their music, poetry, stories, and everything in between within the cafe area of the Wasilla book store.
“We’ve had singers, comedians, musicians, poets, rappers, and people who just want to talk about their day or something special about themselves,” Jordan said.
Jordan said their setup includes a microphone and amp, and they have an acoustic guitar and ukulele onsite for anyone without an instrument of their own.
“We’ve had four-year-olds sing songs and even some older fellas with some incredible instrument talents perform,” Jordan said.
Black Birch Books has hosted Open Mic Nights for nearly four years. Jordan said that she’s heard quite a variety of voices since she started, and it’s become an important staple to their ongoing efforts.
“I ‘collect’ a diverse crowd from the community. It was clear to me that people wanted to be heard in a safe, supportive environment,” Jordan said.
Jordan said that she anticipates a range of five to 15 participants now that their cafe is open. She said that community members support each other as they bare whatever they have to say at the microphone.
“The whole crowd has even turned around so the person performing isn’t as nervous,” Jordan said. “Everyone is excited for every performer.”
Open Mic Nights at Black Birch Books take place during the last Friday of the month from 5 to 7 p.m.
