WASILLA — Firefighters from three departments responded to a house fire off Bogard Road on Thursday.

The burn started in the southeast bedroom at the back of the house at 5900 Fireweed Drive, said Central Mat-Su chief James Steele. He coordinated efforts between his department and the departments from West Lakes and Palmer.

“The back half is about half burned, and a portion of the front is as well,” Steele said. “I would estimate about 50 percent of the house is burned.”

After talking to the homeowner, a Red Cross worker on site said the blaze started when a toddler knocked over a candle. The mom tried to put it out, but the fire grew too quickly.

No one was hurt in the fire.
