Life begins at conception. As a physician, I know this is an indisputable, biological fact. Courts and legislatures may choose to deny it, but their actions do not change the truth.
The Bible teaches that God is involved in the formation of each human life. David said, “You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb...I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (136:13-14). Job attests that God, “made me in the womb” (Job 31:15). Finally, God told Jeremiah, “I formed you in the womb” (Jeremiah 1:5) and twice reminded Isaiah that God “formed you from the womb” (Isaiah 44: 2, 24).
God not only forms us, He also knows us intimately. God told Jeremiah, “I knew you and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). Before Jeremiah’s birth God knew him and set him apart for service as a prophet. Isaiah testifies that God “called me from the womb; from the body of my mother He named me” (Isaiah 49:1). The greatest example of God’s intimate relationship with us prior to birth is described in the announcement of John the Baptist’s birth. Before John was conceived, the angel Gabriel foretold “he will be great in the Lord’s presence…and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born” (Luke 1:15). God would weave together and indwell the developing John.
During the earliest days of our development, we are a mass of cells with no resemblance to the person that will be born. People argue that life may be destroyed at this early stage because the developing child is not yet human in form and not viable outside of the mother. God says we are already known to him even at the earliest stages of development.
God spoke through David, “Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them” (Psalm 136:16). David lived around a thousand years before Jesus, yet God gave him insights into human development that would not be understood for almost three millennia.
In pagan cultures, satanic false gods have always promoted child sacrifice. This abomination was even practice in Israel. God told His people they are being punished and exiled for many reasons. The sin that triggered their punishment was, “because they filled this place with the blood of the innocent and…have burnt their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal” (Jeremiah 19:4-5). In speaking of child sacrifice God said, “I did not command, and it did not come into my mind.” (Jeremiah 7:31).
As a nation, we must repent of our sin of modern-day child sacrifice - abortion. We must love and support women facing the desperate circumstances that would lead them to take the life of their developing child. A child that they do not yet know, but who is known to God. Help them choose life.
