Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident Bobby Dean Bickel, 74, died Oct. 14, 2001 at Valley Hospital in Palmer, after a lengthy illness. A potluck and celebration of life service will be held Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Bickel family home. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend, bring a dish to pass and share their memories of him. As he requested, his ashes will be scattered over his favorite hunting spot at Galena Bay in the spring.
Mr. Bickel was born Oct. 9, 1927 in Hudson, Ind. Mr. Bickel served as a medic in the Army during World War II. He moved to Alaska in 1968 and worked for Suburban Propane in gas service and repair. He retired in 1988.
His interests included spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.
Mr. Bickel is survived by his wife, Catherene Bickel; children, Sandra Marshall of Valdez, Sharri Smith of Palmer, Robert Bickel of Sutton and Mary Jane Louden of Little Rock, Ark.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Basil and Ada Bickel of Hallsville, Texas, and Dick and Shirley Bickel of Middlebury Center, Pa.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Bob Brown of Kentwood, Mich., Sandy and Duane Johnson of Columbia City, Ind., Sheila and John Meyer of Clarksville, Ind. and Marcia and Cliff Shellenbarger of Ft. Wayne, Ind. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
