PALMER - Mat-Su Borough Attorney Teresa Williams presented Mayor Tim Anderson with a letter of resignation Feb. 10. Her resignation is effective at the close of business March 31.
In her letter, Williams wrote, “It was my original intent to remain with the Borough for an extended period of time; however, personal issues have dictated a different course.”
Williams and her husband, Rusty, will be returning to Colorado to be closer to their families and increased employment opportunities for him. “Frankly, it has been an extremely difficult decision,” Williams said. “I am, however, certain it is the right one for our future.”
Recognizing and respecting Williams' reasons for leaving, it is also difficult for some assembly members.
“I am sad to see her go,” assembly member Mary Kvalheim said. “She brought a wealth of knowledge on topics of economic development to the office five years ago, and was able to apply them to several projects in the borough. She will be darn hard to replace.”
Williams leaves behind a staff of what she called two capable attorneys in John Aschenbrenner and Nick Spiropoulos, while the borough proceeds with the process of finding and naming a replacement.
“They are dedicated, hard-working and I believe the Borough would be hard-pressed to find a more competent legal team,” Williams said of her assistants. “I believe they will be an asset to the Borough in meeting legal the challenges in the future.”
The borough attorney serves as the legal advisor to the assembly, school board and other departments of the borough. The attorney's office also represents the borough in civil and criminal proceedings in state, federal and bankruptcy courts.
