In 50 mph winds, volunteers took blasts of snow to the face when loading boxes of turkey meals into a pickup bed to transport to Alaska Family Services. The local nonprofit offers services for people and families to overcome challenges and will use the donations to help provide meals for more than 200 families this Thanksgiving. Borough employees have been donating turkey dinners to nonprofits for more than a decade.

This year Borough Landfill employee Char Avril led the effort. “I gladly participate in it,” Avril said. “We all are just a few paychecks away from needing help. It’s a good thing to give thanks and help others in need, anything to help people. I get that good feeling in my heart. If it wasn’t for the giving hearts of people who I work with who stepped up, we wouldn’t have such a strong showing.”

Mat-Su Borough employees who volunteered include:

Cindy Loyer, Mary Miller, Rachael Richardson, Nick Uphus, Sandy Zartman, Margie Cobb, Krista King, Jennifer Ballinger, Karol Riese, Teresa Dolan, Toby Riddell, Dave Steadman, Jeff Walden, Curtis Townsend, Bob Bechtold, Nancy Adkins, and Char Avril.

Several more also donated food.
