Borough Mayor announces intent to run for Governor

Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries has signed a letter of intent to toss her hat into the ring for Alaska State Governor. She is the third woman to declare her candidacy, along with Lt Governor Nancy Dahlstrom and Bernadette Wilson. The fourth declared candidate for Governor is Click Barton.

Mayor DeVries posted her announcement to social media, along with a photograph of her Letter of Intent.

“Big Announcement. I have filed Letter of Intent to be a candidate for Governor in the State of Alaska primary in August 2026.”

Mayor DeVries is a name familiar to most in the Borough, having been elected Mayor of the Mat-Su Borough in November 2021. She previously served as a City of Palmer Council Member and City of Palmer Mayor for over five years. She is a former Mat-Su Borough Assembly member, former Mat-Su Borough Mayor and former Alaska State Senator.

Mayor DeVries first moved to Palmer 1969, and since that time she has been an active member of many state and local boards and commissions. She has served in leadership positions for many organizations in the Palmer and Mat-Su Borough area. Mayor DeVries and her husband Noel have four children, 13 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
