Borough’s purchase of Big Lake Lions Club Recreation Center set for public hearing May 20

The Matanuska Borough Assembly approved seven new road service contracts in addition to a number of other administrative actions at its regular Tuesday, May 7 meeting.

A public hearing was also set for May 20 on the borough’s proposed purchase, for $400,000, of the Big Lake Lions Club Recreation Center and an adjacent parking lot. This is subject to an appropriation for the purchase in the borough’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget, which must still be approved by the assembly and Mayor Edna DeVries.

The Road Service Area contracts included:

• A $274,145 contract to the Alaska Resource Group for Trapper Creek Road Service Area 30

• $902,884 for a contract with McKenna Brothers Paving for Greater Willow Road Service Area 20

• A $796,720 contract with Alaska Resource Group for Greater Talkeetna Road Service Area 29

• A $189,867 contract with Battleground LLC for Lazy Mountain Road Service Area 19

• To McKenna Brothers Paving for 700,139 for the Greater Butte Road Service Area 26

• To McKenna Brothers Paving for 829,870 for the Caswell Lakes Road Service Area 15

• To McKenna Brothers Paving for $1.831 million for the South Colony Road Service Area 16

• To McKenna Brothers Paving for $1.831 million for the South Colony Road Service Area 16

Contracts for a number of other road and drainage improvements were also approved. These include:

• $124,900 for a contract to PND Engineers for the Wolf and Hart Lakes drainage and improvements study

• $773,636 for a contract to HDL Consultants to design the Engstrom North Extension to Tex A1 Drive

• A contract with Dirtworks Inc. for $484,789 to construct the Melanie Lane and Brian Drive street improvements

In addition, BSI Equipment was awarded a contract for $138,446 to purchase compost containers for recycling at the borough’s central landfill.

The assembly has also set public hearings for its May 20 meeting for proposed property owner assessments for three natural gas service areas, known as improvement districts. These include North Curt Circle for $91,490; Easy Street and Cozy Circle for $66,625; and Echo Lake and Necrason Drive for $231,239; and Homestead Drive, for $68,456.
