HOUSTON — The city of Houston opened early voting for their City Council election on Monday at City Hall on West Armstrong Road in Houston.
The city of Houston has two available council seats. Mayor Virgie Thompson is seeking reelection for Council Seat A and running unopposed. Sandra Porter is running unopposed for Council Seat B, both three-year terms. Houston registered voters can cast their ballot early until Oct. 5.
“We do have a mitigation plan that we’re putting in place. We are asking voters to wear masks, city election officials will be wearing masks, wiping down pens, wiping down our voting booths,” said Houston Clerk Sonya Pevan.
For those who wish to vote on election day, the actual voting booths inside Houston City Hall have been separated to maintain social distance. As did Clerks for Palmer, Wasilla and the Mat-Su Borough, Pevan alerted voters in the city of Houston that absentee by mail ballots were available for request.
“We sent out postcards, some really cool ones this year just giving residents different ways to vote,” said Pevan. “Unfortunately my little community has only requested two ballots.”
The last day to register for an absentee by-mail ballot in Houston is Sept. 29.
