BP 2019 Alaska Teachers of Excellence

WASILLA— British Petroleum recently recognized 21 from across the state teachers as this year’s Alaska Teachers of Excellence. Four of the teachers who won the award were from the Mat-Su Borough.

“These teachers represent the best of Alaska education, and it’s an honor to recognize them with this award,” BP Alaska President Janet Weiss stated in a press release. “At BP, we’re proud to play a part in supporting their continued success and showing our ongoing commitment to the state and to creating the leaders of tomorrow.”

The 2019 Teachers of Excellence from the Mat-Su are: Kimberly Flinn of Goose Bay Elementary School, Sara Lamont of Ron Larson Elementary School, Stacy Molina of Academy Charter School, and Sarah Shepard of Colony High School.

“I’m amazingly honored,” Shepard said after the 2019 winners were announced.

Shepard said that helping students at a crucial time of their life, the last chance before adulthood is what drives her as an educator.

“It’s very encouraging for them to see it’s possible… I want to help them and just being here every day, connecting with them. They know I’m here for them,” Shepard said. “Working with the high schoolers, I love talking to them and helping them plan for their future.”

BP started the award 24 years ago to honor Alaskan K-12 teachers from both public and private school districts, according to the release. Since 1995, BP has recognized over 750 teachers statewide, awarding a $500 gift card and $500 matching grant to their respective schools; plus a trip to Prudhoe Bay to learn about their operations and free access to the Alaska Resource Education’s teacher course.
