Seven teachers will be named 2010 BP Teachers of Excellence for the Mat-Su Borough School District. The 15th annual BP Teachers of Excellence awards dinner will be held at the Settlers Bay Lodge on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Each teacher gets a $500 gift card and an award certificate. In addition, the school of each of the Teachers of Excellence will receive $500. One of the seven Mat-Su teachers will be chosen as BP’s Teacher of the Year. That teacher will receive a $1,500 scholarship for continuing education and a bronze sculpture by Alaska artist Mary Regat.
The Mat-Su winners are:
• Skip Davenport teaches a combined fifth- and sixth-grade classes at Willow Elementary School. He shares his energy and a caring attitude with students.
• Lynda Eller teaches preschool special education at Shaw Elementary School. She focuses on getting her students to believe in themselves and make sense of their world.
• Steven Hall teaches science and physics at Houston High School. He challenges his students to see how science is applied in a real work environment. Hall encourages learning through hands-on experiences and science labs.
• Kathleen Jones teaches fourth grade at Sherrod Elementary School. She works to bring the world into the classroom. Jones teaches her students about giving back to their community by running a recycling program and annual canned food drive at the school.
• Sonja Mackey teaches third grade at Shaw Elementary School. She sees each child as a special individual who deserves her support. Students set goals in her class and come up with plans to accomplish those goals.
• Matthew Swalling teaches band and choir at Palmer High School. He takes teaching to heart and believes that through his leadership and faith in his students, they can all reach their full potential.
• Kai West teaches kindergarten to fifth grade music at Shaw Elementary School. She strives to bring joy into her classroom. Students of all abilities enjoy learning through her music classes.
