WASILLA — When it comes to learning how to ice skate, the Brett Memorial Ice Arena has something for everyone.
For more than 20 years, instructors at the Valley’s oldest ice arena have catered to skaters both young and old, regardless of skill level.
“All ages and abilities, that’s our motto,” Allan Ervin, the manager of the Brett Ice Arena, said.
Within the Brett’s “Learn to Skate” program, teachers provide instruction on the full spectrum of ice skating — everything from the very first strides on the ice to the more intricate skating skills needed to be successful in hockey or ice dancing.
The programs attract both children and adults, although Ervin said it is often the kids who are most interested.
“Typically, the bulk of our skaters are children, with the majority at the lower level,” Ervin said.
But even though the children represent a good percentage of those who participate in the classes, Ervin said there are a fair amount of adults who are either trying skating for the first time or brushing up on their skills.
Instruction comes in a seven-lesson package, for a price of $68, and each lesson includes 45 minutes of ice time. The package also includes a pass to hit the rink during the public skating times, and free skate rental.
“Just like anything else, practice is an important part,” Ervin said.
The program is divided into a variety of groups to fit each skaters needs. In addition to the basic skating class, there are also classes for those interested in power skating, hockey or figure skating.
Ervin said he recommends those new to skating to start out in the basic class, and there is always opportunity to graduate from level to level.
The Brett also offers classes that focus on hockey fundamentals and clinics for hockey goalies.
Classes run consecutively through the winter, Ervin said, offering people plenty of opportunity to get on the ice.
Those interested can contact the Brett Arena at 376-9260 or visit the facility at 746 E. Bogard Rd. in Wasilla.
