WASILLA -- Two brothers were arrested Tuesday evening in connection with a drunken rampage that led police on a chase, back and forth, through Wasilla, terrorizing motorists and leaving thousands of dollars in damages in their path.
Charlotte Hannon reportedly told Alaska State Troopers that the incident began when her 18-year-old son, Charles J. Hannon, shattered the windows in two of her vehicles Tuesday evening after they had an argument in her Wasilla residence on Dunedin Street. Charles also allegedly broke out all the windows in a camper parked in her driveway. The camper belonged to Charlotte Hannon's father, John Schurr, who was up visiting from Montana.
According to court documents filed in Palmer Superior Court by Trooper Eric Lorring, Charles Hannon then left the home with his 14-year-old brother in a Chevy pickup owned by Schurr. The boys reportedly drove recklessly down Shrock Road. Several callers told dispatchers they were run off the road to avoid the truck. One motorist reported that the truck came around a corner on Shrock Road and swerved into her lane. She then reportedly drove off the road to avoid being struck. As the Chevy truck drove by, her vehicle was allegedly struck by a camera, thrown from the truck. The camera broke her driver's side window, causing the glass to cut her left arm and left leg, according to the document. The witness told troopers she was terrified the truck would hit her and she would die.
Trooper Robert French reportedly saw the truck speed past him on Shrock Road but lost pursuit when the truck turned off the road and into some fields. As French and Lorring searched the area for the truck, dispatchers told them the truck had returned back to Charlotte Hannon's residence. When the boys returned to their mother's home, she was reportedly visiting with a friend, Lora Ronning, who had come over, not knowing what was going on.
Ronning said the boys yelled for their mother to come outside and when she refused, they said they were going to hit Ronning's truck. Ronning said she heard the Chevy truck revving and then heard the collision.
As French and Lorring headed back to the residence, dispatchers told them the boys had left again and the truck was back on Shrock.
French saw the truck and activated his lights. The truck reportedly sped up to a high speed, before driving off the road at the end of East McAdoo Way, where French reported seeing two males get out of the pickup and run into the woods.
Meanwhile Lorring had returned to Charlotte Hannon's home. At the residence he reported seeing one of the upper windows broken out with a chair lying on the ground outside the window. Lorring reportedly saw several other broken windows including one just above the main entry door. Lorring wrote that he saw Ronning's new white Dodge pickup parked in the driveway with a dent in it that ran the entire length of the vehicle.
Lorring then joined French at the end of East McAdoo Way where the damaged Chevy pickup had been abandoned. While the troopers were there, dispatchers informed them that the brothers had returned to their mother's home once again. Lorring and French headed back to the residence. When they arrived, the two brothers allegedly refused to come outside, and Lorring said he could hear things breaking inside the house.
Lorring wrote that he was able to talk Charles Hannon out of the house and place him under arrest. The younger brother remained inside the house, however, continuing to break things. The troopers then entered the house and placed the 14-year-old under arrest.
A computer check indicated that Charles Hannon did not have a valid driver's license and he reportedly failed a series of field sobriety tests at the scene, as well as a Portable Breath Test that resulted in a breath alcohol content of .085, which is over the legal driving limit of .08. Charles Hannon's younger brother also failed the breath alcohol test with a content level of .086. The total estimated damages from the entire episode exceeded $10,000, according to the charging documents.
Charles Hannon was booked at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility on charges of third-degree assault, two charges of third-degree criminal mischief, vehicle theft, felony eluding, no valid operator's license, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless endangerment and minor consuming alcohol. His brother was booked into Mat-Su Youth Facility on charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief, fifth-degree criminal mischief and minor consuming alcohol.
