Build senior housing instead

To the editor,

Senior housing would be a sensible alternative for the land now designated for low-income multifamily housing proposed near the two Mountain Rose Estates in Palmer.

This is a well established age controlled community for adults fifty- five and older.

MRE is a community that attracts Seniors choosing to downsize and have fewer responsibilities for upkeep on a home. Covenants are in place to insure the care of yards, flower beds, and exterior appearance of the housing. These rules also apply to noise levels, parking of vehicles, pet walking and clean up, and landscaping around the units. This ensures the property value and beauty of MRE will be preserved for Alaskans in their golden years. Homeowners have relocated here from other cities to enjoy the scenery and quiet neighborhood. The convenient location to downtown Palmer, Senior Center, Glenn Highway, and availability of medical care is a big plus. MRE units are in demand. When one becomes available, it often sells by word of mouth.

Our senior residents are good for the economy of Palmer. The seniors that live in this area like to shop locally and support the businesses in Palmer. Downtown offers interesting and charming shops and there are a number of eating establishments that are frequented for different occasions. There is a choice of Physical Therapy Centers only minutes away from home, a necessity for this age group.

MRE has the honor of having some of the original colonists that have chosen this lifestyle and were some of the first residents in this unique neighborhood. They are the living history lessons of Palmer. They shaped Palmer as the unique city it is.

The homes in MRE were built with the foresight to include accessible features in all the units. This feature alone makes these home desirable for those who are disabled or simply aging.

The residents of this community have located here by choice. Many are the true Baby Boomers born at the end of WWII. There are more Boomers wanting this life style and the reason the homes sell so quickly. This community would welcome more seniors in this corner of Palmer. The truly divergent housing project proposed next to this neighborhood does not fit for many reasons and, in truth, would degrade the quality of life for the already established community of people who just want to live their lives out in peace.
