Building made a lasting impression

To the editor:

Some years ago, some local dignitaries and quite a few of us ordinary people (at least 30 of us) got a tour of the last building left since the front building of the Matanuska Maid co-op/dairy burned. We were all amazed at the quality of the wood used in the building and the gorgeous trusses that held up the roof. A very basic building, but much talk was had at the event about artists or artisans being able to work and show their crafts in this building.

Actually, we have people here in Palmer who have successfully taken derelict buildings and refurbished them to new uses. I hope the plans that (Palmer City Manager Bill) Allen has talked about include consulting with such people, as they can best decide how to use that lovely wood.

I am a real soft touch for long-roofed porches. All it needs is deep windows to be a showplace. I would recommend anyone considering any changes really look at the quality of the building.

Does anyone else remember that tour, walking through those tall weeds into the golden light of a gorgeous, big room?
