WASILLA — Students at Burchell High School in Wasilla wanted to give back to the community. Spearheading ideas, the group decided to help those less fortunate by helping them keep warm during the long, Alaska winters.
School homeless advocate and advisor Deborah Price said the students came together with the idea that life is give and take, not just one or the other.
"Students of the school often have obstacles outside the school. but never fail to participate in the giving part of 'give and take'," Price said.
With that, on Feb. 8, students assembled hats, scarves, and gloves and opted to have the distributed throughout Wasilla public gathering points. Included were Wonderland Park, Nunley Park, Newcomb Park and various bus stops. Once the ensembles were assembled, students tagged the items. On the tag's front read the following--"Giving back to the community that has embraced us. Burchell High School cares." "On back read "Free. Take one."
The following day, BHS students Hayleigh Jones and Kathryn Oakes-Jette placed them at the above locations with hopes that they would be taken by those in need.
