BUTTE — Alaska Raceway Park has has a busy, busty weekend planned to celebrate the summer solstice at the Butte drag strip.
On Saturday, the strip will host a day-long even beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday’s festivities will include the Extreme 3 car show, an audio sound-off stereo competition, as well as a bikini contest and a full series of points races. In the afternoon, another round of racing will get underway at around 5 p.m.
On Sunday, the track will get fired back up, with another full day of racing planned. Gates open Sunday at 9 a.m., with eliminations set to get underway at 2 p.m.

Anchorage’s Rich Kirk was the fastest on the track last Sunday, posting a speed of 220.63 miles per hour to take the Top Eliminator class over Anchorage’s John Childs.
Willie Brown, also of Anchorage, kept age at bay for one more week, celebrating his 53rd birthday by beating Chugiak’s Amanda Reimann in the Top Dragster class for the second weekend in a row. Palmer’s Skip Gosch won the Top ET class, Anchorage Dwayne Lile won the Mod ET, Palmer’s Harold Pigott won the Super ET and Anchorage’s Johnny Jones was the winner in the Open Air class.
Fairbanks’ Kayla MacDonald won the Junior Dragster class, beating out Anchorage’s Josh Mommsen.
Capitol Speedway
WILLOW — The standings are tight in both the mini-stock class and the hobby stock class at Capitol Speedway following race results Saturday, June 14.
Kory Madsen and Brian Vaughan both hold 31-point leads in their respective divisions going into this weekend’s races. Dale Brummer and Nickolas Herdina remain within striking distance of the two, sitting in second place in their classes.
James Ross leads all drivers in overall points with 498 in the pick-up truck class. Paul Townsend sits in second place at 259 points, and Corbin McManus is third at 240.
Dean Nelson also holds a sizeable lead in the stock class with 438 overall points. Ralph Gobert and Linden Fyfe and second and third with 279 and 224 points, respectively.
Jeff Wallace leads the 300 sprints class with 312 points on the season. Jake Baker and Charles Goodenough round out the top three slots.
George Park currently has 115 points and the top spot in the modified lite standings, ahead of the 55 points of B.R. Smith. In the 360 sprints, John McDonald is tops in the standings at 123.
Standout performances from Saturday night included McDonald in the 360 sprint class, where he earned wins in the first and second heats as well as the main event. Wallace also swept all three races in the 300 sprint class.
Ross won the first and second heats from the pick-up truck class, McManus came back to win the main event on the night. Fyfe and Pat Weissert also came back with wins in the main events of their classes after the first two heats.
The speedway will host races this weekend on Saturday starting at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The Willow dirt track is located at Mile 75.5 of the Parks Highway. For more information, visit www.capitolspeedway.org.

WASILLA — North Star Speedway’s GCI Saturday Night Thunder stock car races were rained out Saturday for the second week in a row. That means that the Food Pantry Night scheduled for last week will take place this Saturday.
All race fans showing up at the gates with at least three cans of food get in for half price. Gates at the Wasilla oval open at 4 p.m., with qualifying starts at 5 p.m. and races set to get underway at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.northstarspeedway.com
