ANCHORAGE — Dajanae Harris is already a state champion, but the Wasilla sophomore can now be known by another title — Fastest Alaskan.
Harris won the Princess Cruises Fastest Alaskan race, a highlight of the Big C Relays at The Dome in Anchorage on Saturday.
Harris ran a blazing 12.97 seconds in the 100-meter race to win the event, a finish with a nice cushion between second-place Kimmy Jackson of Dimond.
“It really wasn’t close,” Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said of the race.
Harris posted the second fastest mark of her young career with the win. Her career best is a 12.73 she hit twice while winning Northern Lights Conference and state titles in the 100 last year. As a freshman, Harris was second in the Big C’s 100, but is already ahead of her game this year.
“Clearly, she’s the favorite to win the state title for the 100,” Howell said. “If she stays healthy, stays focused, people will be hard-pressed to match her.”
As impressive as the win, Howell said, was her showing in three different races in the 100 over the weekend. After running a 13.14 in the preliminaries, Harris hit 12.97 in the race semifinals as well.
“She has limitless natural ability,” Howell said.
Harris’ win was one of a number of victories for the Warriors. Junior Morgan Dampier was part of three of those wins, finishing first in the 400 and 800 and helping the Warriors win the 1,600 medley relay and 3,200 relay.
Howell said Dampier ran the 800 just 18 minutes after finishing the 400, and praised the junior’s stamina.
Dampier, Jessica Pahkala, Mandi Ringgenberg and Alyssa Hutchins set a state season best in the 3,200, with a time of 10:03.92. The foursome finished about 19 seconds ahead of second-place Colony.
Howell said Wasilla’s team of Dampier, Harris, Hutchins and Cori Schleich went into the Big C with an eye on the 1,600 sprint medley course record. Wasilla finished just a second off the record with a time of 4:21.
“It showcases the variety of talent we have,” Howell said.
Alice Strick also finished second in the long jump for Wasilla and Mariah Burroughs was second in the 3,200, breaking her personal best by about 50 seconds.
Senior Shellina Irwin swept the throwing events to lead the Colony girls. Irwin used a throw of 34 feet, 9 inches to win the shot put. She also set a personal best of 115-1 during her win in the discus.
Erin LaMere notched a third-place finish in the shot put for the Palmer girls.
Senior Jim McCall led Palmer with a win in the boys’ long jump. Colony’s Cole Foster and Anthony Bricker both finished in the top-5 of the event.
