MAT-SU — Ahead of the August 18 Primary Election date, the Alaska Public Offices Commission released the campaign finance reports for candidates running for the two Senate seats up for election in the Valley and the five available seats in the State House. Finance reports include the total amount raised, the total amount spent, the cash on hand and the seven day total raised from a period during July 18 through August 8.

In Senate District D, a crowded field has entered the race for the Republican Primary.

Incumbent Senator David Wilson leads the group of five republicans running for election to Senate Seat D, including Chandra McCain-Finch, Bee Rupright, Loy Thurman and Stephen Wright. Of the Republicans running, Wilson has raised $18,783.45 in total with $10,593.14 in cash on hand. Over the last seven days, Wilson leads all Senate D candidates with $3,440 raised. However, nonpartisan candidate Dan Mayfield who is currently an Assembly member has outraised Wilson in total. Mayfield has raised $21,653.32 in total and has $15,272.03 in cash on hand. Rupright has raised $5,445 in total, Thurman has raised $3,986.29 in total and Wright has raised $5,196.78 in total. McCain-Finch has not reported any money earned or spent.

Senator Shelley Hughes is running unopposed in the Republican Primary for Senate Seat F, but will face Libertarian candidate Gavin Christiansen in the General Election. Hughes has raised $26,119.33 in total and spent only $4,229.57 of that, leaving $21,889.76 in cash on hand which is the most of any candidate running in the Valley. Christiansen has raised $820 in total and spent $704 of that.

In House District 7, four candidates are running in total and Chris Kurka and Lynn Gattis are both vying for Representative Colleen Sullivan-Leonard’s vacated seat. Kurka has slightly outraised Gattis while spending less thus far. Kurka has raised $19,501.95 in total and still has $9,199.51 in cash on hand.

Gattis, who formerly served in the House, has raised $17,035 in total and spent $12,683.30, leaving $4,341.70 in cash on hand. Undeclared candidate Jamin Burton has raised $7,003 and spent only $828 of that thus far. Nonpartisan candidate Thomas Lamb raised $1,005 and spent all of his campaign funds.

In House District 9, incumbent Representative George Rauscher has narrowly outraised his opponent in the August Primary Luke “LD” Howard. Rauscher has raised $18,076.44 in total and spent $16,098.76 of that. Rauscher has received $7,919.06 in contributions in the last reporting period. Howard has raised $17,782.88 and spent $14,033.57 of that, leaving Howard with $1,771.71 more than Rauscher in cash on hand. Democratic candidate Bill Johnson has raised $15,290 and still has $11,662.14 in cash on hand.

In House District 10, Assemblyman Jesse Sumner has raised the most of any candidate in his effort to unseat Representative David Eastman. Sumner has raised $91,954.83 in total and spent $81,006 of that. Eastman has raised just $33,384.43 but has $7,538.72 more cash on hand than Sumner. Democratic candidate Monica Stein-Olson has raised $9,347.03 and still has $6,621.73 in cash on hand and nonpartisan candidate Patricia Faye-Brazel has not raised any money but has $574.59 in cash on hand.

In House District 11, incumbent Representative DeLena Johnson has raised more than 10 times her opponent. Johnson has raised $13,745.09 and spent less than half while Alex Fetta has raised $1,313.81 and spent it all. Democratic candidate Andrea Hackbarth has not raised any money.

Cathy Tilton is the only current legislator running completely unopposed in both Primary and General elections, raising $18,047 with $15,144.17 remaining.
