With the tone of many of the campaigns, statewide and local, I am sure many of you are very anxious for the election season to conclude. One principle that I have relied upon is that I never forget that this district is my home. I will still be here long after I leave office (hopefully voluntarily). The manner in which I present myself and my ideas, and talk about others, is a reflection of my character. It is not something I take lightly.
My first campaign two years ago was noted by many as one of the most positive in the state. I am grateful that the discussion of the issues in an honest and civil manner led to a friendship with my former opponent with whom I have enjoyed period exchanges of ideas long after the election. To have his support this time after a contest in which we both wanted to win is gratifying. I hope I never forget that "winning at all costs" often means doing things you know just aren't right.
If I ever even considered such a poor course, I know I have plenty of family, friends and neighbors (including a few of my elementary school teachers) to set me straight! I plan to conclude my first reelection effort in the same manner I have conducted it to date -- in a positive and honest manner. After all, I expect to continue to be here long after my last election, where I have lived for the past 35 years. I sincerely thank my neighbors in District 16 who have entrusted me with this seat in the state legislature, and ask for your continued support on Tuesday.
