Seat sought: Houston City Council Seat G

Are you an incumbent: Yes

Residence in Houston: 22 years

Public Service: Twelve years city council and 20 years with U.S. Army, including three Vietnam tours.

Family Information: Married with three grown children and nine grandchildren.

Why are you running for City Council at this time: I am good with people and helping them is a plus.

What experiences do you have that demonstrates your ability to be an effective council member: My 12 years on council — six years of those as mayor — and 20 years experiences in the military.

If elected, what would be your top priorities: My top priorities would be city roads. We have been trying for years to get roads paved, so far we have only got four miles of roads paved and 36 miles that need to be done. Houston has been growing so much that in the last six years we have increased our population by 50 percent. We have also seen a decrease in revenue from the state and federal government. Even with that, we have manage to get capitol improvement money in the state’s general budget this year, the first time in over a decade. Unfortunately, our new governor vetoed that money as well as millions of dollars throughout the state. I have since corresponded with the governor and feel she is more aware of the importance of supporting Houston's desire to have safer school bus streets, as well as all the other streets in Houston, that are easier to maintain by paving them.

How would you attract new industry and jobs to Houston: I am trying all the time to attract new industry to Houston. There are two companies I have been working with. One is Alaskan based and the other is from Washington State.

What is the most urgent issue facing the city today and how would you address it: Paving city roads and removing junk cars.

Identify and explain one principled stand you would be willing to take if elected, even if it might cost some popularity points with the voters: None that I can think of at the moment.
