WASILLA — A local card-making project that aims to craft hand-made greeting cards and give them to troops stationed overseas to use to send messages home kicked off Saturday at St. David’s Episcopal Church at Mile 2.2 Wasilla-Fishhook Road.
Volunteers spent about four hours designing and assembling cards of the first of what will be monthly card-making events, said Julie Grey Pollock. Everyone is invited to bring scissors and double-sided tape and join the monthly effort, she said.
Local mom Deborah Waisanen, whose son is deployed overseas, organized the project as a way to honor troops and to keep herself occupied while her son is away.
Waisanen said part of her inspiration came from looking at old letters from previous wars America has fought.
Saturday’s session focused on creating birthday and Easter cards. Upcoming sessions will make cards for things like wedding anniversaries and other occasions
The next Wasilla Card Project meeting is Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Mile 2.2 Wasilla-Fishhook Road, Wasilla. For more information, contact project organizer Deb Waisanen, at waisanen@mtaonline.net and note “Wasilla Card Project” in the subject line.
