WASILLA — For the second year in a row, a team from Mat-Su Career and Technical High School won the Alaska Tsunami Ocean Sciences Bowl competition held in Seward Feb. 26-28.
The Career and Tech team of Lucas Arthur, Cade Johnstone, Jacob Cucinello, Sarah Montalbano and Leah Wyzykowski will represent the Alaska region at the national competition in Morehead City, North Carolina, April 21-24.
In addition to the overall win, the team won the High Point Award for scoring the highest number of points in a single round of the quiz competition, and Wyzykowski won the associated art contest with her mixed media piece.
Teams from Juneau-Douglas High School secured second and third place, followed by a Homer team and another team from Career Tech — Hector Campbell, Zach Barnes, Drake Ballais, Kyle Hasse and Soneeta Vue — which won the Sportsman Award.
Palmer High’s team placed 11th, followed by Wasilla teams in 14th and 16th. Nineteen teams participated in the statewide competition.
