MAT-SU — Still tied in the championship round, Juneau-Douglas High School’s Pogonophoraphobia narrowly defeated the Mat-Su Career and Technical High School’s Mat-Tsunamis in the 16th annual Alaska Tsunami Bowl Feb. 8-10 in Seward.
Finishing in second place, members of the Mat-Tsunamis — Christopher Erickson, Ariel Hasse, Lucas Hyce, Reno Hyce and Courtney Monroe — won University of Alaska Southeast tuition waivers.
The winning team won an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Alaska in the national competition in Milwaukee, Wisc., in April, as well as tuition waivers from UAS.
Also representing the Mat-Su was the 16th place Career Tech team The Cerulean Tempests, Wasilla High School’s Marianas finished in 20th place and the Career Tech Wave Runners finished in 21st place.
The Alaska Tsunami Bowl competition consisted of two components: a research project, including a 20-page research paper and a 20-minute oral presentation, and a timed quiz bowl-style match.
