Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Mr. Carl Ward Lanz, 81, died of cancer at Elemendorf Air Force Base Hospital July 30, 2003.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at Valley Funeral Home Chapel, 151 E. Herning Avenue in Wasilla. Additional services will be held at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m.
Mr. Lanz was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Taloga, Okla.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Craven, and, again, during the Korean War from April 1951 through February 1952.
Mr. Lanz had been a resident of Alaska since 1956. He had lived in Seward, Juneau, Haines and Wasilla.
He owned Lanz Construction in Juneau.
He was a member of the Lutheran faith.
Mr. Lanz is survived by his wife of 57 years, Hazel; sons and daughters-in-law, Arlen and Bonnie Lanz, Vernis Lanz and Casey Lanz; daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Rick Rallo; grandchildren, Kory, Kyle, Orin, Austin, Coltin and Julie Lanz, Victor and Stephen Dartt and Tanis Moore; great-grandchildren, Alec and Haily Moore and Katlyn Lanz; brothers, Frederick, Buel and James Lanz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will be at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene, Ore.
Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla.
