Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Carma Louise Schiefer, 71, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, after fighting a battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service and potluck are planned at the Chugiak Senior Center, 22424 N. Birchwood Loop, Chugiak, at 2 p.m. Nov. 19.
Mrs. Schiefer was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Evanston, Wyo., to Hannah and Homer Whittaker. Her adopted grandmother, Jennie Demander, took care of her during her youth.
Mrs. Schiefer attended Evanston High School. She married Thomas (Blackie) Schiefer in 1954 and traveled throughout Wyoming with her husband while he worked in the oil fields. In 1969, the family moved to Alaska because of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and work in the oil fields.
The family lived in Eagle River until 1976, when they moved to Knik and subsequently bought the bar at the end of the pavement and named it Blackie's Place.
Mrs. Schiefer returned to Eagle River, where she remained until the time of her death.
Her family wrote, "Carma enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets and sweaters and won several awards because of their quality. She took pleasure in attending exercise classes, luncheons, and Guys and Gals Night Out at the Chugiak Senior Center."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas (Blackie) Scheifer; mother, Hannah; father, Homer, and brother, Homer.
She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Kohler and Jennie (Imp) Johnston; son-in-law, Burton Kohler; grandchildren, Tracy Scott Kohler, Jeffrey Kohler, Kathryn Hooper, Carrie Johnston-Carnes, Andrea Ellenson, Jordan Melton and Jade Johnston; great-grandchildren, Tracii Kohler, Cheyenne Kohler, Jasminne Johnston-Conley, Alexandra Johnston-Carnes, Tristian Ellenson, Thailie Ellenson; her beloved dog, Ladde, and many beloved friends and caring neighbors.
