Mr. Raney was born May 2, 1935, in West Plains, Mo. On a quest for adventure he moved to Anchorage in 1953. His first job was as a box boy at Piggly Wiggly, where he met his wife, Arlene. Mr. Raney was known for his strong work ethic and proud of his 13 years of working without taking a day off for sick leave.
In the early '60s, he and his partner, Jerry Urling, opened a grocery store in the Muldoon area. Soon afterward, they opened and operated the Family Market at 13th & I. Moving on, in 1979, Mr. Raney and his family bought Value Liquor, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Mr. Raney served on the Cabaret, Hotel and Restaurant and Retailers Committee.
His family wrote, "Carroll enjoyed many activities, which included flying, fishing, skiing, basketball and water-skiing. He was a speed skater in the Fur Rendezvous. Much joy filled his heart to be together with his family, grandchildren and many friends. He will be remembered for his smile, sense of humor, and always having something nice to say. We wait in hope to be reunited, through our Savior Jesus Christ."
He is survived by Arlene, his wife of 47 years; two sons, Donald and Roger; daughter, Mary Funner; her husband, Richard; grandchildren, Michael and Victoria Funner, all of Anchorage, and his niece, Sandra Lofgren of Peters Creek.
