Celebrate ‘National Public Lands Day’

To the editor:

Saturday, Sept. 24, is National Public Lands Day. All across our country citizens of all ages will enjoy, celebrate and show support for America’s public lands. I want to encourage Alaskans to do the same by taking time to experience our special and unique parks, refuges and special areas designated in Alaska, and to consider becoming a part of conserving them in perpetuity for our following generations.

From our vital wetlands, which contribute to clean air and water, to rivers and streams, forest and granite peaks providing an abundance of habitats for fish and wildlife at every level, our remaining public lands are deserving of diligent care and conservation stewardship.

A great example of such citizen stewardship was described in Natasha Pineda’s wonderful letter complimenting Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats for our conservation efforts. We are very thankful for such appreciation and acknowledgement from individuals, and the Frontiersman through great articles about our projects, events, and beautiful photos such as Robert DeBerry’s recent, stunning image of Reflections Lake in autumn.

As the award-winning organization we have become, our greatest success is the increasing visitation from locals and visitors alike, tremendous support from our members, school teachers and community partners, and a growing sense of importance that this piece of our public lands and, indeed, all public lands are deserving of care. There is much to behold in places such as this, so go. Find yourself reveling in this beautiful season somewhere on your favorite of public lands and give thanks for them.
