WASILLA — The city of Wasilla is halfway through its Summerfest series of community events tying in with Independence Day, lasting until July 7. This is one of the biggest annual events in the city, drawing large crowds for the iconic parade, fireworks and iconic parade. The Independence Day parade begins in downtown Wasilla at 11 a.m. with the mayor’s picnic to follow at 1 p.m. near the Wonderland Park.
There will be live music, a hot dog eating contest, and other games and activities. There will also be free hot dogs, chips and drinks. According to the city of Wasilla’s website, about 3,000 people are expected to arrive to the town’s staple of the summer. Wasilla Mayor Bert Cottle will be on the grounds, helping the volunteers and mingling with the community.
The Independence Day fireworks show will begin at 11 p.m. at the Wonderland Playground. There is no admission or parking fees for the parade, picnic or firework show.
This year’s festivities include a carnival with rides, games, food and local vendors. The A-1 Midway Carnival picks up again from July 4 to July 8 from 12 to 9 p.m. There will be several other events following, including a live concert by David Lee Murphy, a car show put together by the 49th State Street Rodders, a rodeo, and BBQ competition.
