HOUSTON — Olivia Davies is no stranger to success.
The Wasilla High School junior is a three-time first-team all-state selection and a region player of the year, and has helped lead her team win three conference titles and a pair of state championships.
But that’s on the hardwood.
Earlier this spring, the Wasilla basketball star decided to join the Warriors track and field team for the first time.
“I’m doing it to have fun mostly,” Davies said.
Now Davies is having fun winning titles and breaking records.
Davies, competing in her first region meet, earned four titles and broke a pair of region records during the Region III Championships Friday and Saturday at Houston High School.
“I’m super excited,” Davies said Saturday afternoon after winning both the girls’ long jump and 100 meters within about a 20-minute span.
Davies won the triple jump, long jump, 100 meters and 200 during the two-day meet at Houston.
“It definitely drives me,” Davies said of the success. “But it’s still for fun.”
Davies shattered region records in both the 100 and 200. She ran a personal best time of 12.29 seconds in the 100. That beat the prior mark of 12.80 set by former Colony standout Hallie Huggins in 2005. Davies ran another personal record in the 200, posing a time of 25.49. That broke a mark held by another former CHS standout, Stevie McDowell, who ran a 25.89 in 2004.
Her time in the girls’ 100 is the fastest clocked in Alaska since 2016 and the fifth best in Alaska history.
Davies also hit 36 feet, 5 ¼ inches to win the triple jump and 16-4 to finish first in the long jump. Her mark in the triple jump is a personal best.
Davies said she had thought about joining the track team in the past.
“I’ve been wanting to do it for the last two years, but basketball usually kills me after the season,” Davies said. “This year, I thought I might as well. I’ve only got two more years.”
Davies said track has been a nice addition to basketball.
“I love doing it. I love my teammates, love my coaches,” Davies said. “I wish I started when I was younger.”
Knights dominate Division I boys’ team standings
Fueled by the athletes in the field events, the Colony Knights jumped to the top of the boys’ team standings. Colony used 159 total points to win the Region III Division I boys’ team title.
Senior Jarek Schultz, junior Brayden Reeves and freshman Patrick McMahon each captured individual titles for the Knights.
Schultz used a toss of 145-10 to win the discus. Reeves won the triple jump with a leap of 40-5.5. McMahon earned a title in his first region meet with a mark of 5-10.
Julian McPhail was the runner-up in both the high jump and long jump. Gavin Block scored a trio of top-3 finishes for Colony, placing second in the 1,600 meters and third in the 800 and 3,200. Jon Pomrenke was third in the 100 and 200. Jake Hessinger (300 hurdles), Andres Rameriz-Nunn (shot put), Hunter York (discus) and Saaren Wright (high jump) also placed third for the Knights.
Colony sprinted to a win in the 400 relay. Pomrenke, Oliver Wyche, Ty Campbell and Joshua Jurasek combined to post a time of 46.09.
Palmer finished second in the boys’ standings with 111 total points. Senior Matthew Daniels led the Moose with a sweep of the boys’ hurdles. Daniels clocked a time of 15.95 in the 110 hurdles and 42.17 in the 300. Larry Cutsforth also scored an individual win, finishing first in the 800 with a time of 2:03.64. Cutsforth (400), Lev Robertson (800) and Connor Owens (triple jump) each finished as a runner-up.
Cutsforth, Chance Tucker, Tucker Christiansen and PJ Cutright combined to win the 800 relay for the Moose.
Wyatt Helton led the Wasilla boys with a victory in the long jump and runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles.
Presley Petersen earned an individual title for the Colony girls, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-2. Petersen was also second in the long jump. Grace Looney was second for Colony in the discus. Lilly Sessom finished third in both the long jump and high jump.
Teeana Nicholai (100) and Shandra Cutsforth (400) led the Palmer girls with runner-up finishes. Sophie Wright was third in the 800.
