Champions for Children named

The Mat-Su Education Association recently paid tribute to 10 volunteers at the group's annual Champions for Children banquet.

Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer attended the May 9 banquet, telling the group her thoughts on volunteerism and the positive role of volunteers.

The Champions for Children named at the event were Christie Alexander, Drew Bagby, Valerie Jones, Gordon Maher, Carolyn McCain, Holly Mooney, Dr. and Mrs. Duane Odland, Karen Reimann, Jo Renk and Jerry Roberts.

Each year, teachers nominate individuals and businesses that have demonstrated continued support of children and public education in the Valley.

"We have parents, grandparents, individuals without children and businesses coming into the schools to help with tutoring, special projects and activities, mentoring and providing other goods and services," said Barbara Morris, the MSEA president, in a press release. "It is unfortunate we can't give everyone this award because each and every volunteer is vital to the education of children."

Students Adam Patterson and Bobby Bowlin provided the entertainment.
