Each year, teachers of the Mat-Su Education Association nominate parents, community and business members who have been outstanding volunteers in the schools. The individuals and groups volunteer not only in individual classrooms, but are involved in many activities that benefit all students in the schools.
"All volunteers deserve this award," said Barbara Morris, president of the MSEA. "It was exciting to read everything the volunteers have been doing in our schools. Several volunteers planned enrichment activities while some came to school and did a little bit of everything. We even had some businesses that made a positive impact on many Valley schools. This is the first year we have awarded a PTO and a student volunteer."
This year's award banquet featured Dr. Shirley Holloway speaking on the merits and value of volunteers in public education. High school students studying foreign languages also treated guests to a special presentation.
Champions for Children award recipients this year are Bob Cederholm, Shelly Eller, Devva Elmore, Hank Hartman, Teresa Huntley, Kristi Keene, Dr. Daniel Larson, the Palmer High School PTO, Michelle Shierman and Kathy Varner.
