Wasilla resident Charles Lee Humphreys, 78, died of cancer at his home on April 4, 2005. His ashes will be scattered over the land of the family homestead. Condolences may be sent in care of his wife, Pamela Humphreys, 4725 E. Diamond Way, Wasilla, AK 99654.
Mr. Humphreys was born March 15, 1927, in Seattle, to Charles and Guelda Humphreys. Upon graduating from high school, he attended three years of college in the field of civil engineering. On Nov. 2, 1945, he joined the Army and served three years in World War II. He was discharged in late October 1948 with a Victory Medal from the war.
He moved to Anchorage in 1983 and to Chickaloon in 1991, where he built his own home. In 2001, he made Wasilla his home.
Over the years, he worked as a civil engineer for a contractor on the North Slope. He and his wife were caretakers for Bristol Bay Lodge from 1995 until 2000 and he worked for AVCP Housing, building homes in various villages. While working in these villages, he built doghouses in his free time for shelter-less animals. He served on Chickaloon Community Council for one year.
His wife wrote, "I loved Charlie deeply. He was deeply respected by all who knew him. He was always a wonderfully generous man and was more a giver than a taker. He loved his pets, especially his poodle, Pearl. He will forever be in my heart."
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Humphreys of Wasilla; son, Lee Humphreys of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters, Johanna Grant of Phoenix and Kelly Bond of California; brothers, Don Humphreys and his wife, Gloria, of California and Allan Humphreys of Virginia; a stepbrother, Dick Humphreys of California; a stepsister, Charlene Humphreys of California and several grandchildren. Arrangements were with Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
