PALMER — Chase Stephens has spent her prep career chasing track and field gold. Her opponents have spent that same time chasing Stephens. Stephens has grabbed gold plenty of times during her illustrious career. But few have caught Stephens.

Saturday, Stephens added two more titles to her resume, winning the 4A girls’ 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump during the final day of the Region III Championships track and field meet at Colony High School. With the region long jump title she won on Friday, Stephens won three individual events at the meet. Her wins over the weekend added to what was already an astronomical total. Stephens has now won 13 individual region titles in her varsity track and field career.

“That’s one of the things that stands out as probably won of the most impressive things anybody has seen,” Colony head coach Mark Strabel said of total number of region wins for Stephens. “She’s just such a versatile athlete.”

With her work over the weekend, Stephens can now claim the four-peat in three different events. She has won four straight region titles in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She also won the region title in the high jump last year, giving her four first-place finishes as a junior.

All of this came from an athlete who nearly didn’t participate in track.

“As a freshman, I wasn’t going to try. I liked basketball better,” Stephens said Saturday. “But after my freshman year, I was like OK, I could actually be really good.”

All of the success landed Stephens an opportunity to compete for Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. Stephens, who graduated earlier this month as part of Colony’s class of 2016, said she expects to continue with the hurdles and jumps, and also may add the pentathlon to her list of events. Strabel sees great potential for Stephens at the next level.

“She’s going to get that much better,” Strabel said. “Being able to focus on that, be exposed to a lot more training, the sky’s the limit.”

Stephens, who also finished second in the 4A girls’ high jump, helped Colony win the 4A girls team title with 145.25 total points. Madeline Ko also grabbed a first-place finish for the Knights, earning a win in the 300 hurdles. Ko added a second-place finish in the long jump, and fourth-place finish in the high jump. Jordyn Block (1,600) and Kristina Tennesen (discus) also finished as a runner-up.

The Knights won the 3,200-meter relay. Block was also third in the 800. Jill Bowker finished third in the 1,600 and 3,200, and fifth in the 800. Colleen Geraghty was fourth in the 800 and 1,600. Cathelyne Powers finished fifth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 800. Katie Miller was sixth in the 200 for the Knights. Anna Condio was third in the triple jump, and fourth in both the high and long jumps.

Ceil Dunleavy led fifth-place Wasilla with another win in the high jump. Dunleavy, the two-time defending state champion in the girls’ 4A high jump, used a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches, to capture the crown on Friday. For more about Dunleavy, see the May 24, 2016, edition of the Frontiersman. Dunleavy was also second in the triple jump.

Kaylyn Kelly placed in a pair of events for Wasilla, finishing third in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Chantel LeBon was fourth in the high jump for the Warriors, and Demiana Glenn was fourth in the shot put. Jestine Burt was fifth in the 100 hurdles.

Ruby Woodings ran to gold to lead the Palmer Moose. Woodings finished first in the 800 meters. Savannah Dixon was sixth in the 400 for the Moose. Rya Berrign was fifth in the 1,600.

Colony boys runner-up

Brandon Nicholson helped the Colony Knights finish as the runner-up in the 4A boys’ team standings, with 118 total points.

Nicholson was named the most outstanding athlete for the 4A boys class after winning two events and placing second in two others. Nicholson won both the high jump and triple jump events. He was also second in the long jump and 400 meters.

Colony also won the 400 and 800 relays.

Jordan Nero (100), Jacob Hessinger (300 hurdles) and Dakota Peterson-Thompson (1,600) earned runner-up finishes in their events. Peterson-Thompson was also third in the 3,200. Zane Vrvilo was third in both the 200 and 400. Jon Pomrenke was fourth in the 200. Jonathon Holgate was fourth in the long jump. Alex Alvarado was fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Matthew Clyde (110 hurdles) and Melvin Charles-White (110 hurdles) were both sixth for the Knights.

Senior Brady Southwick earned a pair of regions titles to lead the fifth-place Moose. Southwick swept the hurdles, winning both the 110 and 300-meter events. Chase Ferris finished second in the 200. Donovan Eiman was third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Larry Cutsforth was fourth in the 400. Nick Johnson was sixth in the long jump.

Quincy Fuller finished fourth in the 800 for the Wasilla Warriors. Beau Cork (200), Wyatt Helton (110 hurdles), Caleb Drumm (300 hurdles) and Karl Greathouse (3,200) were fifth. Ben Frick was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. David Kolomeychuk finished sixth in the shot put.

Allison VanPelt led Houston, placing in three different events in the 3A girls’ class. VanPelt was third in the 200 and 1,600, and fourth in the 3,200. Kimberly Quincy placed third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Chanel May-Thomas was third in the long jump for the Hawks. Cassie Kapuniai (long jump) and Deni Koreze-Richards (triple jump) each placed sixth for the Hawks.

John Koeneman (shot put) and Ben Bitler (discus) each placed sixth for the Houston boys.
