Chickaloon Village is among the communities in Alaska that recently received part of nearly $21 million in federal grants, according to a release issued Friday by U.S. Rep. Don Young and U.S. Sens. Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski, all R-Alaska.
The village received a $30,000 Department of Justice grant that will be used to support the planning process for a tribal drug court. Other grants awarded include the following:
• Department of Agriculture
M/V Lazy Bay in Kodiak Island Borough received a $337,000 business and industry guaranteed loan to be used to buy a fishing vessel to assist in its efforts to develop a scheduled weekly delivery service to reach all the villages of Kodiak Island.
Lake and Peninsula Borough received a $20,000 rural business opportunity grant to be used to provide business advice, as part of a technical assistance program focusing on residents of the borough.
Ionia Inc. received a $140,500 community facility grant to be used to build a community center for Ionia residents and clients in Kenai Peninsula Borough. The grant will provide additional space for the center's program, offering a therapeutic living environment for the mentally disabled and their families.
• Department of the Army
Davis Constructors and Engineers Inc. received a $6.89-million contract for the design and construction of a child development center and landscaping at Eielson Air Force Base.
• Department of Commerce
The University of Alaska Southeast received a $210,774 NOAA marine mammal data program grant to be used to provide observational data on killer whale predation upon increasing Steller sea lion populations and collect acoustic recordings to determine the structure and composition of killer whale calls at the time of kills. The data will be used, along with concurrent studies in the Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands, to better understand the role of predation in Steller sea lion populations.
• Department of Education
Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka received a $2,496,978 grant for the delivery of quality-focused teacher preparation and lifelong learning programs.
The Alaska Department of Education received $2,496,978 for projects that will enhance the recruitment and retention of quality teachers, particularly in rural areas of the state.
The Prince William Sound Community College received a $204,498 grant for programs to improve Native student enrollment and retention.
• Department of Health and Human Services
The Alaska Federation of Natives received a $900,000 grant toward healing best practices.
The Cook Inlet Council Alcohol/Drug Abuse received a $500,000 grant for services to rural women and their children.
The Fairbanks Native Association received a $749,941 grant for a program on residential treatment for pregnant girls.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services received a $1,967,500 grant for health-care facilities and other construction.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services' Division of Public Health received a $485,000 grant.
• Department of Housing and Urban Development
The Hoonah Indian Association received a $122,273 Indian housing block grant.
• National Endowment for the Humanities
The TDX Foundation in Anchorage received a grant of $41,000 for planning a local exhibition, traveling exhibition and a Web site on the history and heritage of the Aleuts of Saint Paul, in the Pribiloff Islands.
The Yupiit School District in Akiachak received a $10,000 grant for an interdisciplinary college-level course integrating the humanities and Yup'ik culture and philosophy, offered to the school district staff members in three rural villages.
The Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center in Haines received a $5,000 grant for development of a long-term plan for preserving material culture collections of Alaska's native peoples.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks received a $10,000 grant for the inclusion of teaching materials about Sugpiaq culture and language into the first- and second-grade curriculum.
• Department of the Interior
The Rockford Corp. received an $822,680 contract for the construction, and subsequent operation for one year, of a soil and groundwater remediation system in Glacier Bay National Park.
• Department of Justice
The Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association received a $125,300 grant to continue and enhance the direct service response to child abuse within the region.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services received a $359,208 grant to support programs that enforce the underage drinking laws program.
• Department of Transportation
The state of Alaska received a $1,857,000 grant to be used to construct a taxiway at Ted Stevens Anchorage International airport.
