Chickaloon tribe receives $87,000 federal environmental grant

Chickaloon Environmental received an $87,600 grant from U.S. EPA for Tak'ats' Project, a wetland conservation plan. This is to develop wetland identification, monitor and assess capacity within the staff, and produce a wetlands conservation plan.

Chickaloon Village Housing Department reports the transitional house in Sutton is 90-percent complete. A policies and procedures draft and rewrite is complete.

Work began at the government building in Sutton on July 30. Upgrades to the second floor are sponsored by First Alaskans Foundation.

Forestry preparing to post signs

The forestry department is preparing to post "No Trespassing" signs on Chickaloon property. They delivered a pamphlet to Fish and Game announcing the closure of Chickaloon lands to moose harvesting. It also stated that we are opposed to the cow moose hunt. This is in conjunction with the community in our immediate area. Land-use permits are available from Chickaloon's office at Mile 55.5 Glenn Hwy.

New education administrator hired

Donita Peter is the new education administrator. She is in charge of grant writing and grant reports, "It Is Time To Share Our History" curriculum development, JOM, and day care aspects of the education and cultural preservation departments. She is also in charge of the National Parks Service grant, which will complete Katherine Wade's autobiography, and an educational unit surrounding the autobiography, among other objectives. The "It Is Time To Share Our History" CIRI Heritage report was completed on time and sent. Further funding to complete the pilot process has been approved by the CIRI Foundation. Funds have been received and more are forthcoming.

Gwich'in appreciates Chief Harrison

A framed certificate was sent to Chief Gary Harrison on behalf of the Gwich'in Nation for the Vashraii K'oo Gathering of June 2001. It reads: "In sincere appreciation for your strong effort and dedication in challenging all odds. You have inspired many people with your work of honesty and determination. Shalak Khik gwinzii gwits'iinyaa."
