WASILLA — It’s that time of year again. The Christian Motorcycle Associations Midnight Son chapter’s annual Bikers Fighting Hunger Food Drive is underway. Numerous businesses across the Valley have collection bins, and several annual fundraising dinners are around the corner.
“It just started growing year by year. Now, it’s gotten to the point everybody looks forward to it every year,” Glen Butts, CMA rider and Bikers Fighting Hunger founder. “People show up in droves.”
Fundraising efforts started at the beginning of January and run through the end of February. During that time, the Bikers Fighting Hunger invite the public to donate canned goods or make monetary contributions at any participating location.
“With the New Year, comes a new hope and beginning for all. But, some families are in a tough spot and could use our help to make ends meet through the rest of the winter,” Butts said.
The public is also invited to join the bikers at any of their community lunches.
The Bikers Fighting Hunger are hosting their annual Roses for Tacos event with their partner Denali Harley Davidson at the shop Feb. 15 from 12 to 4 p.m. Attendees can either donate 12 cans of food or $12 for homemade tacos and plenty of community-minded bikers to talk to.
“it’s a really good shindig. It’s not quite as big as the Spaghetti Feed but it brings in a lot of people every time,” Butts said.
The annual Bikers Fighting Hunger Spaghetti Feed wraps up the two-month food drive. Butts said that he anticipates over 150 people to cycle through the Spaghetti Feed, some just to donate but many to stay and enjoy his wife Natalie’s cooking.
“The meatballs are her specialty,” Butts said.
The Spaghetti Feed runs 12 to 5:30 p.m. at the Mat-Su Alano Club Feb. 23.
“It’s a really fun time,” Butts said. “A lot of people say they want to help out with things. I found a way I can,” Butts said.
Local donation bins can be found at businesses like Three Bears Alaska, Denali Harley Davidson, Spenard Builder’s Supply, and Bright Minds Learning Center.
