Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

SEWARD — The race for the girls’ team title during the upcoming Region III Championships could be interesting.
Friday, only two points separated Soldotna and defending champion Wasilla during the Frank Dieckgraeff Invitational in Seward, the home of 2013 Region III 4A meet.
While Friday’s race is not an exact preview of the upcoming championships, scheduled for Sept. 28, in Seward. Teammates outside the region participated, but the Frank Dieckgraeff Invite could be a tease of the competition Region III runners could see in less than two weeks.
Wasilla placed three runners in the top 7, but finished third in the team standings with 66 total points. Soldotna placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 32, and finished second in the standings with 64 points.
Homer, a Region III-3A team, won the girls team title with 62 points.
Wasilla freshman Alex Mathis posted her fifth top 3 finish of the season, and finished third in the girls’ 5-kilometer with a time of 18 minutes and 57 seconds. Mathis finished less than two seconds behind runner-up Briahna Gerlach of Glennallen, another 3A program. Defending state champion Allie Ostrander of Kenai ran away with the title, with a mark of 17:44.
Wasilla junior Riley Burroughs (19:57) edged older sister Mariah Burroughs (19:58) and the pair finished sixth and seventh respectively. Junior Peggy Mathis returned from injury to place 18th in the race.
Colony finished fifth in the girls’ team standings. Knights freshmen Elisabeth Bowker (20:08) and Cathelyne Powers (20:29) finished 11th and 13th.
Freshman Ruby Woodings led fifth-place Palmer with a 19th-place finish.
Kenai used a pair of top 3 finishes to win the boys’ team title, but the Colony Knights finished as the runner-up with 78 points. Senior Brandon Schafer (16:58) was sixth to lead the Knights, notching a time of 16:58. Seniors Boaz Sessom (17:17) and Lyon Kopsack (17:22) finished ninth and 10th for the Knights.
Wasilla senior Brendon Lee, was just outside of the top 10, posting a time of 17:26 to finish 11th. Ryan Kavalok led Palmer with a time of 18:15.
