PALMER — Colony High School senior Samantha Everett of Palmer has been appointed to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She is one of only 235 students nationwide selected for the class of 2017 that reports to the Academy in New London, Conn., on July 1.

Everett is the current Battalion Commander of Colony’s Army JROTC, which was named the top JROTC unit in the state during the state drill meet at Service High School recently.

The Coast Guard Academy differs from the other service academies in that it does not require a congressional nomination and it is not required to admit cadets from all states. Admissions are based solely on merit and the acceptance rate is the lowest in the country at approximately 4 percent.

Everett said she hopes to based in Alaska some day.
