PALMER — For the last two years, Damien Fulp has received a great deal of attention in the postseason honors and awards. It might have something to do with the amount of attention opposing coaches have to give Fulp throughout the season.
The Colony senior was recently named the Northern Lights Player of the Year for the second straight season. Fulp has also been named first-team all-state for the 4A boys by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches.
“He let his play determine what others think of him, coaches in particular,” Colony head coach Tom Berg said recently. “Really for the last three years, Damien’s been a kid where every time you play Colony, you have to worry about stopping him. He can go off at any time.”
Fulp, who has already signed his National Letter of Intent to play basketball at UAA, is currently averaging about a dozen points per game. He’s also among team leaders in assists and steals. But Fulp’s value goes far beyond the statistics, Berg said.
“Damien this year was asked to provide leadership, a stabilizing role for this team,” Berg said.
Fulp, who was narrowly edged by Service’s Reece Robinson for the 4A player of the year honors, was one of handful of Valley players recognized by AABC.
Colony junior Faith Farris was named second-team all-state in the 4A girls class. Palmer senior Adam Ramoth was named third-team all-state in the 4A boys class.
A pair of Houston Hawks were named third-team all-state at the 3A level. Senior Matt Barron was named third-team all-state for the boys, while senior Savannah Wells received third-team honors for the Houston girls.
Susitna Valley placed a pair of players on the 2A lists. Dawson Matthews was named second-team all-state for the Su Valley boys. Emily Hartley was named third-team all-state for the Rams girls.
Fulp was one of a number of Valley athletes included on the NLC all-conference teams. Fulp joined teammates Graham Dinkel and Bailey West on the NLC boys first team. Wasilla’s Cameron Brown and Cash McGregor, and Palmer’s Ramoth and James Nisbett were named first-team All-NLC.
Wasilla’s Alex Baham and Colony’s Antonio Bush were named second-team NLC.
The Colony Knights led Valley girls with three NLC selections. Junior Faith Farris and senior Izzy Tweed were both named first-team, and senior Jennifer Solano received second-team honors.
Palmer’s Leya DePriest was named first-team All-NLC, and Palmer’s Kalei DePriest was named to the second team. Wasilla’s Shayla Johnson was named to the first team and McKenna Dinkel received second-team honors.
