When Wasilla’s Johnna Elkins ripped a run-scoring single into left off of Colony starting pitcher Mack Everett in the top of the first inning Tuesday night, the stage was set for a rainy rivalry contest. But Everett would not surrender another hit to the Warriors, and the Knights’ offense provided more than enough run support, as Colony defeated Wasilla 20-3 at Alcantra Fields.
The Knights’ half of the first inning went well.
“When we’re on, we’re on,” said senior shortstop Chelsea Friesen, of her team’s bats.
Friesen started a string of five straight hits with a single to right in the bottom of the first. Cassidy Evans put Colony back on top, 4-3, with a home run that scored Courtney Simmons. The Knights were far from finished doing damage from the batters box, though. Colony collected another six runs in the inning.
Once Everett and the Knights seized the lead, they settled into cruise control. Everett scattered six walks and four strikeouts over the next four innings to earn the victory.
“It’s great,” said Friesen, of Everett’s toughness from the mound. “You know she has her composure, she isn’t going to break. I couldn’t ask for a better pitcher.”
Friesen helped her team’s cause with two doubles, 4 RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Cassidy Edwards pitched the entire game for the Warriors. She was also the Warriors’ best scoring chance, advancing to third base after walking in the fifth inning.
But the Knights’ offense exploded again in their half of the fifth.
Colony Head Coach Brenda Rupp, who said she teaches the team to hit the ball where it is pitched, was pleased to see her batters driving the ball to all fields.
The Knights wore out the right side of the field from the plate. The first six batters of the inning scored on three consecutive run-scoring singles to right. Colony scored seven runs to close out the fifth stanza en route to improving its record to 2-1 in conference, and 4-3 overall.
