FAIRBANKS — A few Wasilla runners have already staked their claim atop the state’s leader boards. But a Colony sophomore is also making her pitch to be included among Alaska elite.
Audrey Michaelson won a pair of events during the Lathrop Invitational in Fairbanks last Saturday, continuing her stellar run through the 2011 season.
“She’s done a great job training,” Colony head coach Tom Lincoln said Monday afternoon. “She’s realized what she can do.”
Michaelson notched personal bests while winning the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races during the final day of the Lathrop Invite. Michaelson posted a time of 5 minutes, 19.79 seconds to win the 1,600. She beat her own personal best by about two seconds.
Michaelson shattered her own record in the 3,200, running an 11:32.37. The mark was more than 30 seconds better than the time she used to win the event at the Skyview Invitational in April. Lincoln said the Colony coaches are watching as Michaelson becomes a much more confidant athlete.
“She’s really blossoming,” Lincoln said. “She’s seeing that, ‘hey, I can compete and I can be good.’”
Michaelson has notched first place in a half-dozen races since April 22. She started her run by going 3-for-3 during the Skyview Invite in Soldotna. Michaelson won the 1,600 and 3,200 races, and upset defending state champion Morgan Dampier of Wasilla in the 800. Michaelson continued by winning the 1,600 at the Palmer Invitational in late April, and scoring the two wins last Saturday.
Michaelson and senior Shellina Irwin helped the Knights finish second in the girls’ team standings with 160 total points.
Irwin continued her dominance in shot put and discus, sweeping the throwing events.
“She’s been real consistent,” Lincoln said.
Irwin used a throw of 34 feet, 10 inches to win the shot put. Her toss of 117-01 grabbed her first in the discus.
Michaelson also helped Colony win the 3,200-meter relay. Michaelson, Makenzie Thompson, Tracie Hann and Abby Jahn combined for a time of 10:10.33 to beat runner-up and rival Palmer by 16 seconds.
Wasilla won another girls team title at the Lathrop Invite, finishing with 210 total points.
Sophomore Dajenae Harris, the defending state champion in the 100, won both the 100 and the 200. Senior Brianne Bohn, who has quickly become one of the top hurdlers in the state, also nailed two wins. Bohn finished first in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and now has seven firsts in hurdle events since April 22.
Dampier, a junior and another defending state champion, won the 800. Dampier, Mariah Burroughs, Alyssa Hutchins and Mandi Rinngenberg ran to a win in the 1,600 relay.
Palmer finished fourth in the team standings with 98.5 points.
Tress Whitfield, Taylor Blake, Jamie VanHoomissen and Sarah Houchen combined for a win in the 400 relay. Palmer’s Erin LaMere and Rachael Huffman finished as the runner-up in the shot put and discus, respectively.
Wasilla boys second
Junior Devon Teeling swept the throwing events to help Wasilla finish second in the boys’ team standings.
Teeling hit 46-20.75 to win the shot put, and 144-03 to finish first in the discus. Teeling’s throw in the discus was a personal best, nearly 13 feet better than his prior personal record.
The Warriors finished with 133 points, edging rival Palmer by just two points. Senior Jim McCall won the 200 for the Moose and junior Joe Day finished first in the 300 hurdles.
Senior Anthony Bricker led fifth-place Colony with a victory in the 110 hurdles.
Valley programs head south this weekend to compete in the Northern Lights Conference Championships at Skyview High in Soldotna. For more on the NLC meet, see the Friday edition of the Frontiersman.
