PALMER — The Palmer Pioneers were an inning away from scoring their first win in program history Tuesday. But the Chugiak Mustangs found a way to steal the victory.
Chugiak scored six runs in the top of the seventh to earn an 8-4 win over the Pioneers in Palmer.
Palmer, one of four American Legion programs new to Alaska this summer, led 4-2 heading into the final inning. The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the second, and used a pair of runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1.
Stephen Sreberneck finished 2 for 3 at the plate, and drove in two runs for Palmer. Bryce Costra also had an RBI. Ryan Perkins, Chelsea Friesen and Cooper McLaughlin scored runs for Palmer.
Kevin Hale made the start for the Pioneers, pitching 6 2/3 innings. Hale fanned four.
