The candidate filing period has opened up for residents of Wasilla interested in helping move the city forward.

Three seats for the Wasilla City Council are available:

Council Seat C, currently held by Mark Schmidt who was appointed to the seat earlier this year after the previous council member resigned due to health concerns. This seat is a one-year term, ending in October 2026.

Council Seat E, currently held by Nikki Velock is a three-year term ending in October 2028. Velock was first elected to the seat in October 2019, then re-elected three years later in October 2022

Finally, Council Seat F, which is currently occupied by Alina R. Rubeo. She was first appointed to the seat in March, 2022 to fill a partial term, then elected to the seat in October 2022. This is also a three-year term.

Council members serve for a maximum of two consecutive 3-year terms, without a break in service for at least one full year. After serving two full terms, a person must step down for at least one year before being eligible to run for election again.

The council is comprised of six members, elected on an at-large basis, for staggered three-year terms. This means that all six represent the entire City population.

The council approves the budget, sets rates of taxation (property tax and sales tax), and appropriates funds to provide for City services. Through laws passed, the council establishes policy statements, which are executed through administration. Additionally, the council deliberates on subjects of interest or impact upon residents.

People interested in running must also meet certain qualifications including being a registered and qualified voter of the city of Wasilla pursuant to WMC 4.08.010; be a resident of the city, or of territory annexed to the city, for one year immediately prior to the election. Candidates may be required to provide proof of residency as required by the city clerk.

Candidates must also comply with campaign reporting requirements as required by law.

A person can only run for one City seat or office. If, after filing for office, the candidate chooses to run for a different seat or office, the candidate must submit another Declaration of Candidacy for said seat or office and a Withdrawal of Declaration of Candidacy form for the former seat or office.

The filing period opened July 21 and will continue through August 1, 2025.

Filings can be submitted on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Clerk's Office.

Elections are set for October 7, 2025.
