MAT-SU — Local city council elections will take place this week. Early voting for Houston, Palmer and Wasilla Council candidates began on September 20 and Election Day is October 5.
In Houston, eight candidates are running for three available council seats. In-person voting will take place at Houston City Hall at 13878 West Armstrong Road in Houston. Houston residents can vote for Ron Bass, Cole Carter or Shanie Heger for seat C. Tony Kuse and Lance Wilson are candidates for Seat D and Mike Adams and David Johnson are running against incumbent Gina Jorgenson for Seat G. Polls will be open from 7 a.m., until 8 p.m., on October 5 and the Canvass Board will convene on Friday, October 8 at City Hall to count remaining ballots.
In Wasilla, four candidates are running for two available Council seats. Incumbent Jordan Rausa is running for reelection in seat A against former State House Representative Colleen Sullivan-Leonard. Former Deputy Mayor Stu Graham is running for seat B against Dajonee Hale. Polling locations will be at Wasilla Middle School and Wasilla City Hall for city of Wasilla voters and remain open from 7 a.m., until 8 p.m on October 5.
In Palmer, four candidates are running for two available council seats. The two candid ates who receive the most votes will win seats on the Council. Current Council members Julie Berberich and Steve Carrington are running against Lee Henrikson and Pamela Melin. Polling locations are at the Mat-Su Borough Dorothy Swanda Jones Building in the Assembly chambers and in the Borough Gym and will be open from 7 a.m., until 8 p.m.
This year, new stickers are being distributed to voters in the city of Palmer. Palmer City Manager John Moosey commissioned the new voting stickers as a change from the typical red, white and blue “I voted” stickers for Palmer voters.
“I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something nobody else did,” said Moosey.
