Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Clara Katherine (Katy) Goddard, 84, died Aug. 7, 2005, of a heart attack at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, surrounded by her family. Services are pending and will be held in both Palmer and Glennallen.
Mrs. Goddard was born June 17, 1921, in LaCrosse, Wis., to John and Anna Kroll.
During World War II, the family moved to Spokane, Wash., where she worked for the Red Cross. She met and later married Alaskan Jack Goddard in 1945.
The last 60 years of her life were spent in Alaska, living in Ketchikan, Fairbanks and Delta Junction from 1945 to 1959; in Copper Center, from 1960 to 1990, and in Palmer from 1990 to her death.
Mrs. Goddard worked as a bookkeeper in the family business until retiring in 1981.
She was well-known for her volunteer work and was active in her church, St. Bartholomew's of Palmer, as well as the Pioneers of Alaska, Palmer Senior Center, Beta Sigma Phi, American Legion Auxiliary, the Lumpy Ladies Exercise Club, Copper Valley Historical Society and other organizations through-out her life.
An avid fan of baseball, Mrs. Goddard never missed a home game of the Mat-Su Miners.
Her family wrote; "Katy was a blessing to everyone she met. Her joy in life was a reflection of her deep love for everyone and everything. We were so blessed to have her as mother, grandmother, and friend."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack.
Mrs. Goddard is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Earl Ashing of Palmer; daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Al Sanders of Copper Center; grandchildren, Travis Ashing of Rochester, Minn., Gavin Ashing and fianc/e, Amy Whitstine of Palmer, and Katy and Ryan Sanders of Fairbanks; sisters, Helen Opolsky of Shelton, Wash., and Janet Davis of Liberty Lake, Wash.
Funeral arrangements are by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
