Classes for participants

HOUSTON — For eight years Linda Lockhart has participated in the Valley Arts Alliance’s Wearable Art and Runway Fashion Show, creating 17 pieces of wearable art.

Her creations include The Zip, Salmon Queen, Dripping, Points, Carhartts and Carrots, The Steampunk Pirate, Fairies for Angie (a six-piece ensemble), Electronica, Pirates of Dollar Lake (a three-piece ensemble), and The Bon Bon.

With a goal of increasing awareness and participation, she will teach classes on the process of creating and bringing to life art that fits the body and is presented in a “wearable art show.”

Lockhart will offer classes from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturdays from Jan. 3 to Feb. 14 at the Top Drawer Studio in the Meadowood Mall at the corner of Parks Highway and Big Lake Road.

The goal of these classes is to take students through the entire process from concept to creation, stage presentation and practice, then present their work at the Valley Arts Alliance show Feb. 21 in Palmer.

Students also will have a second opportunity to show their work during the April 11 Second Saturday Top Drawer Wearable Art Show at the Top Drawer Studio. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center in Houston and the recycling efforts at the Transfer Site in Big Lake.

Tuition is $25 and covers all seven classes as well as additional time (as needed) during the weeks or evenings leading up to the show in Palmer. Students will be responsible for artist fees if entering the show in Palmer (usually $25 — funds support the work of the Valley Arts Alliance) as well as needed materials — determined by their design as discussed during the first class. Lockhart also will coach creation of original music for the presentation of each piece.

Top Drawer Studio will provide tables, manikins, sewing machines, glue guns and other tools as needed.
